Semrush Authority Score (AS)

AS is the most compound of the three. It is built on three pillars (link power, organic traffic, and spam signals) and uses eight weighted factors including follow link count, referring domain strength, organic traffic volume, Google visibility, and link growth patterns. AS is the only metric among the three that incorporates organic traffic directly into the score.

For quality evaluation, AS catches what DR misses most critically: sites with inflated backlink profiles and no real search presence. A site with DR 60 and zero organic traffic will return a significantly lower AS, because Semrush treats that traffic gap as a red flag for link manipulation. Ahrefs found the most referring domains (487 versus 241 in GSC) but showed the lowest GSC overlap at 47%. Moz found the fewest domains but achieved 83% GSC alignment, meaning the sites Moz counted were predominantly sites Google also acknowledged. Semrush sat in between on both volume and overlap.

Two explanations account for why a tool reports domains that GSC does not show. First, the tool may have discovered links Google has not yet crawled.
