How to become successful as a freelancer on online marketplaces

The past two years have really changed how we all see the world. The way that we socialise, the way we shop, and of course, the way we work have all changed vastly from what we have all been used to.

The most significant change is how many people have decided that working remotely from home is a better idea for them. Some have been able to do this within their current job role; however, for others, this has meant that they needed to change what they do for a living.

This has meant that there has been a rise in people who decide to become freelancers. Freelancing is a great way to use any existing skills you may have (or push you to learn new skills, too) and make money. However, you need to keep in mind and think about many things when it comes to setting up as a freelancer and making it a viable business idea.

To help you get started and get out there, we have put together our guide on how to become a successful freelancer using online marketplaces.

How to start freelancing

Before you decide to be a freelancer, you need to ensure that you shift your perspective on your finances. To start with, things are going to be somewhat tighter than they would in a regular income based role, which means that you will need to think about how you can balance what you spend with what you will be bringing in.

It might be a good idea to think about what treats and expenses you can cut down on, as this will help reduce your outgoings and take some of the financial burden off you.

Next, it is time to think about what you want to offer. What skills do you currently have that other people could benefit from? You may be surprised to learn that something that you think is relatively run of the mill and standard is incredibly sought after elsewhere.

Many business owners need the exact thing that you can offer, no matter how basic it may seem, so never undersell what you can do.

Once you have decided on what freelance work you want to take on, you need to think about how much to charge. It may be a better idea to keep your prices low when you first start as this will encourage people to use you and then, in turn, build up your reputation, experience and portfolio.

The best place to head to start thinking about pricing, as well as finding work that you can complete, has to be freelance marketplaces.

Beginner-friendly freelance marketplaces

Whilst you can try to forge a career as a freelancer with your website and your marketing, this can be a much more complicated way to try and make a success of yourself. It is a much better idea, at least for the start of your career, to use the online freelance marketplaces to help you secure work and advertise yourself as a freelancer.

The good news is that there are plenty of fantastic choices when it comes to finding a freelancer marketplace, but whilst this can mean that you will be able to find work easily, it does mean that you may be overwhelmed by all the choices.

As a beginner, you will want to find a marketplace that is easy to use and can help you find work in those early days. Thankfully, there are a couple out there that can do just that.

Fiverr is one of the best to start with; whilst it may offer lower prices to those looking to secure work, it has a wealth of opportunities online, which means that you will be best placed to secure some good quality projects.

Another website that you may want to check out is People Per Hour, which is one of the bigger freelance websites out there. It can be a busy place, but once you get yourself started on there, you can forge a career for yourself.

How to get more sales as a freelancer

Once you start to learn more about being a freelancer, then there is a good chance you will want to make sure that you get as many sales as possible. This can be hard to do at times, simply due to the many other freelancers out there who are offering the same as you and who are probably more experienced.

However, despite the fact that it may be tricky to do. That doesn’t mean that it is entirely impossible. One of the best things you can do is to ensure that you set out what makes you different from others out there in the industry. What is your unique vantage point?

It might be how long you have been in a certain industry? That you can work across a range of skills or simply that you have some incredible technical knowledge. Whatever you think sets you apart from the rest, then make sure that this is highlighted.

It is also essential to try and create a tailor-made package that you can sell. Some clients will not know what they need, which means that they can get lost in the sea of freelancers offering more vague approaches to their work.

If you create a package of your skills outlining what you can do, you will find that clients are much more likely to buy from you simply because you show them that you know what you are doing and what you can do to help them.

You also need to try and offer upselling and cross-selling when you can. Many business owners would rather keep as much of their work to one freelancer as possible as it is easier to manage, so if you have another set of skills, you think they may need. Then why not highlight this to them?

Freelancing can be hugely rewarding and get you on your path to making money and being a success. So, why not stop thinking about whether or not it will be suitable for you and instead focus on setting up and getting yourself out there?
